The number of active COVID-19 cases in NE Iowa is dropping--but deaths are rising

The latest COVID-19 figures for the six counties in NE Iowa are showing a decline in the number of active cases, but an increase in the number of deaths.
Three weeks ago, there were 1,583 active cases of COVID-19 in the six-county area. On Saturday, there were 1,144 active cases: 266 in Fayette County, 249 in Winneshiek County, 206 in Allamakee County, 168 in Clayton County, 146 in Howard County and 109 in Chickasaw County. The total of 1,144 cases represents a 28 percent decline in active cases.
But as of three weeks ago, 112 NE Iowan had lost their lives to COVID-19. As of Saturday, that figure stood at 147--a 31 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 deaths. 47 Clayton County residents have died from COVID-19, 26 Allamakee County residents, 22 residents of both Fayette and Howard counties, 19 Winneshiek County residents and 11Chickasaw County residents. In total, more than 4,100 Iowans have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March.
Overall, 7,533 people in the six-county NE Iowa area have gotten COVID-19, while 6,242 of them have recovered.
