December was warm and dry

Decorah meteorologist Richard Bernatz says December was warmer and drier than most previous years.

The daily average temperature in Decorah in December was 28.5 degrees -- 6.7 degrees warmer than the 128 year historical average of 21.8 degrees. Decorah's warmest temperature for the month was 56 degrees on December 9th and 10th. The coldest temperature was 0 degrees on December 24th.

December precipitation totaled 0.39 inches -- 0.81 inch less than the 1.20 inch average. December's snowfall totals were much lower than normal. Decorah only had 5 days of measurable snowfall compared to the 4 to 5 day average.  Total snowfall for December 2020 was 6.5 inches -- 4.9 inches below the 128 year average of 11.4 inches.

Compared to all Decembers since 1893 (128 years), 114 Decorah Decembers were wetter, and 11 were drier. As far as temperatures over the past 128 years, 13 Decembers were warmer, and 113 were cooler compared to Decorah's 2020 averages.
