Opponents of a municipal electric utility in Decorah have started a petition

Opponents of a proposal to create a municipal electric utility in Decorah are getting organized.

A group calling itself "Decorah Residents Against Replacing Alliant" have started a drive to get 500 signatures on a petition opposing the referendum.

The group says on its petition page, "The possibility of a new public electric utility in Decorah is a huge undertaking, expensive and uncertain.  Decorah residents already pay very high taxes---we don't need to replace something that isn't broken.  We need to focus on more urgent matters at hand in our city, such as replacing an aging elementary school."

The petition can be viewed here.
