Ask Mr. Answer Person: "What's going on at The Cut?"

Edith's question is short and to the point: "What is going on at The Cut?"

Mr. Answer Person says: "The answer to your question is a piece of good news.

First of all, the background: The heavy rains we had earlier this summer washed a lot of rocks and soil down The Cut, where they collected where the concrete ends.

So City of Decorah officials decided to clear out the mud and debris from the stream bed.  They then got an offer--Winneshiek County volunteered to do the work for them, since the county had the right equipment.

So this is a wonderful example of the many ways the City and the County work together, holding down expenses in the process.  City Street Commissioner Dave Tollefson says the cooperative arrangements "save thousands of dollars."  It's not the only example--the city and county cooperate frequently on snow removal, for instance.

It's a story that's not told often enough--how local governments in Winneshiek County help one another--and, in the process, help keep property taxes lower.
