Downtown bike corrals will get traffic flags

Posted: Mon, Jul 8, 2013 8:07 PM

Editor's note: On Monday night we posted a suggestion from Darrin Walter that the new bicycle corrals in downtown Decorah needed reflectors to warn motorists of their location.  Now comes this response from David Lester, who is a member of both the Downtown Decorah Betterment Association board and Decorah's Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District board):

Great idea!  The racks were designed to hold reflective flags that attach to each corner and post to make the bike corrals more visible.  The flags were ordered by the city of Decorah a few weeks ago and I learned from City Manager Chad Bird that they are being installed Tuesday.  The idea of the reflective tape is also another great idea that is being considered.

This was a fun, collaborative project between John Condon's welding class at Decorah High School and the city of Decorah. SSMID approved funds to pay for the bike corrals and city employees installed them about two weeks ago.

One corral is located in the 400block of Water St. in front of the Northeast Montessori school and the other one is located on Winnebago Street by Donlon's Health Mart.

We really hope that bikers use the corrals instead of leaning their bikes against buildings or locking their bikes to trees, which can damage or kill our downtown trees. Bike on!
