The American Cancer Society's Winneshiek County staffer, Lenore Theobald, has e-mailed this Letter to the Editor:

"This year's annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Winneshiek County raised $32,000 to support the Society's mission of saving lives from cancer.

Through their hard work in preparing for the event, and by spending hours walking for the cause, Winneshiek County residents certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.  Over 150 people participated in this year's Relay event. The teams were comprised of area families, faith-based groups, businesses, clubs and other organizations.

Every day, two Iowans every hour will hear the words, "you have cancer."  Virtually all of us know someone facing a cancer diagnosis.  And, it's critical that we come together during Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Winneshiek County was made possible by many area businesses that sponsored the event, donated to the Silent Auction or allowed us to display information about the event in their business.  In addition, the event could not be possible without the wonderful team of volunteers who devote their time to the fight against cancer.  Without the passionate individuals we could not accomplish what Winneshiek County is doing in the fight.  This community is simply amazing and we thank you for your generosity!

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
