Letter to the Editor: Races now end by 9:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m.

I was reading the article about what the noise ordinances are in Decorah and I had some thoughts. Most towns/cities that have a noise ordinance enforce these between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. For the last how many years the races have generally been over between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.  This right here is a vast improvement from when the races would go to midnight or later.

If they took the races away, I think that it would only be fair to take away Friday night football games because those can get pretty loud. This should include Luther football games as well. All night events at Nordic Fest should be cancelled because those are awfully loud. The fireworks should be cancelled, bars should not be allowed to have DJ's, people should not be allowed to have parties/get-togethers outside or in garages because they also can get loud. Any night activities at the fair and the rodeo they just had also should not be allowed.

I'm sure that there are other loud events that happen at night and are within Decorah City limits that would also fall under this category. I think this issue is becoming petty. When you really stop and think about it, its not that long of a season. The races only last for a couple months out of the year and it's not even every weekend. I just looked at the schedule. There are only 14 scheduled races for the whole entire year (I did not include the make-up race that was held on May 19th). Only 14 days out of the year! That's it. All of the other activities that happen through the year take up more days than just 14.

I think people need to stop complaining about something so petty. The owners, staff, drivers and fans have been more than willing to respect the residents of Decorah by having the races done between 9 and 10 pm. I think it is time for Decorah residents to respect the owners, staff, drivers and fans and let us have our 14 days of the year.

(Note: has posted additional videos from Monday night's meeting about noise issues)
