Letter to the Editor: Races should finish earlier

Posted: Wed, Jun 5, 2013 2:21 PM

(Note: The City of Decorah's Community Betterment Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday to discuss community noise issues, especially race track noise.)

Alan Sand of Decorah has e-mailed this Letter to the Editor:

Racing fans don't want to give up their summer races and townspeople would like to enjoy a Saturday evening on the porch or deck without having to use sign language to communicate.

A change in the hours of racing could accommodate both race fans and those objecting to the noise if the racing hours ended by 6:00 p.m., or even by 7:00 p.m.  I know people are by nature resistant to change, but for the greater good, perhaps it's not such a big ask. How about it, race fans?  Is there any thing those of us who look forward to having a few friends over on a Saturday night for shrimp on the barbie could do for you in exchange?

Paul Scott replies: "I think this is an interesting idea.  This would give people a chance to be outdoors on Saturday evenings without being bothered by the noise and yet it would preserve the races.  But as Alan points out, there probably needs to be something to "sweeten the deal."  What would make sense?  An additional race night or two?  A parade through downtown Decorah?  Free beer? (Just kidding!)  Send us any ideas you have.
