Ask Mr. Answer Person: a reader from Norway inquires about Halloween etiquette

Posted: Sat, Nov 3, 2012 8:06 PM

Kjell Magnus Rivera-Hogberg e-mails from Norway: "I used to live in Decorah, but have now moved to Norway.  Halloween is kind of starting out here, but they need some guidelines for how to behave. Wondered if you could send me a couple of lines for proper Halloween etiquette."
Mr. Answer Person says: "We asked Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon for some suggestions, and here's what he recommended:
Wear light colored costumes and masks that don't restrict vision
Carry a flashlight
Only go up to houses with lights on
Cross streets at crosswalks and not at mid-block
Young children should be accompanied by adults or older kids
Don't eat candy until you get home and it has been checked by parents
Trick or treat in groups
Attend organized community events or Halloween house parties hosted by trusted people
Don't go into houses to collect candy

These are all great suggestions, but Mr. Answer Person is surprised Chief Nixon missed the most important piece of advice related to celebrating Halloween in Norway: "Whatever you do, don't hand out lutefisk as a treat!"
