Is a roundabout the answer at College Drive and Locust Road?

Jim Maloney e-mails the following response to earlier comments by Darrel Jensen about the College Drive/Locust Road intersection:

"Roundabouts are a new intersection option growing in popularity.  I have often thought (as a property owner on North Street and a Decorah resident adjacent to Locust  Road) that a roundabout intersection would work better at the referenced  location (rather than slowing things down with traffic signals).  The problem with roundabouts in general is the relatively high amount of right-of-way area needed to make things fit.  That would have to be studied by the City Engineer and considered by the City Council.  I believe the City thinking is to leave it as a 4 way stop given the improvements that were just made to the intersection this past year.

I know roundabouts require change and many residents do fear that.  The DOT is now constructing and promoting roundabouts throughout the state including to our south at the intersection of State Highways 3 and 187.  I also think the DOT should consider a roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 9 & 52 west of town (which is currently in tough shape).  I think this would add a nice aesthetic touch to the area that of course now includes the new trail bridge (along with providing smoother, safer traffic flow).
