Ask Mr. Answer Person: "Why wasn't Short Street opened to traffic during Nordic Fest?"

Al asks Mr. Answer Person: "Why wasn't Short Street opened to traffic during Nordic Fest?  The road was completed, except for a small space that could have been graveled.  I thought the construction schedule was designed so traffic wouldn't be affected during Nordic Fest?"

Mr. Answer Person says: City of Decorah officials had extensive discussions about this question late last week.  You point out one of the choices that was studied--opening Short Street to traffic by putting down some gravel to allow the new pavement to be used.  But two factors weighed against this option.  First of all, traffic would go from two lanes to three lanes to two lanes, which was felt to be confusing.  Secondly, full traffic control setup would be needed only for a couple of days until Monday's new detour changed everything,

Another possibility was an early start to the new detour that will be in effect starting Monday as construction moves to the next phase.  But city officials felt the potential confusion of a new detour was not warranted.  They also had concerns about using a new, untested traffic detour.

In the end, city officials decided it was best to continue using the marked detour through Nordic Fest.
