Ask Mr. Answer Person: "Is our high electricity bill unusual?"

Posted: Tue, Apr 3, 2012 11:29 AM

George e-mails Mr. Answer Person: "We're out of town for the winter and we've noted a big increase in our electric bill even though our house is unoccupied.  Also, the person who looks after our house reports a huge electric bill ($600) even though she works most days and has only a one-bedroom apartment.  Have you heard other complaints of high electric bills?  How big was the recent rate increase?"

Mr. Answer Person says: "Maybe some deer or raccoons are coming into the house during the day and holding parties.  The last rate increase for Alliant Energy was December of 2010, when the Iowa Utilities Board rejected Alliant's request for a 14 percent increase and awarded a 10 percent increase instead.

Any increase in rates should have been offset by a decrease in the number of heating degree days during this unusually warm winter.

But we have plenty of loyal readers who can weigh in on this topic--has anyone gotten an unusually large electrical bill lately?"
