Ask Mr. Answer Person: "Where can I recycle CFL bulbs?"

Posted: Tue, Apr 3, 2012 11:26 AM

Ellen e-mails Mr. Answer Person: "Where do we take CFL bulbs for disposal?

Mr. Answer Person says: "Ellen's e-mail is timely.  I have new information to share about disposing of the new-style light bulbs.

In the past it was expensive to recycle the CFL bulbs--recycling companies charged $2.50 or more per bulb!

But Ace Hardware in Decorah says they have found a new recycling pickup company and will accept the CFL bulbs starting March 16th for exactly what the company is charging--59 cents for CFL bulbs under four feet long and 79 cents for U bulbs and for CFL bulbs four feet or longer.

Meanwhile, the Winneshiek County Recycling Center in Freeport says you can take the CFL bulbs to their facility during daytime business hours--and they won't charge you anything.  However, the free recycling is limited to residential light bulbs and to a "reasonable" number of CFL Bulbs.
