Ask Mr. Answer Person: "When will the Courthouse clock get fixed?"

Posted: Thu, Aug 25, 2011 3:27 PM

Tim e-mails Mr. Answer Person: "Even though the question has come up before, we ask it again as many visitors during Nordic Fest wonder, "Why is it that your beautiful Winneshiek County Courthouse clock does not work"?

Mr. Answer Person says: The large clocks on top of the Winneshiek County Courthouse are powered by a motor that turns several long rods that drive gears on the faces of the four clocks.  The mechanism is very complex, which means parts have to be custom made and repairs are a tricking thing.

Fortunately Decorah resident Mark Burgdorf knows how to fix the clocks.  He tells Mr. Answer Person he's getting ready to return to the tower to make repairs.   Burgdorf broke an arm after he conducted an initial inspection of the clocks last year, so the repairs have been delayed.  His arm has healed and Burgdorf is now promising he will have the courthouse clocks running again soon.  In the meantime, enjoy Mr. Answer Person's picture of the inner workings of the courthouse clocks.
