Congressional candidates Bill Maske and Daniel Lensing clashed Tuesday night over their visions of the future of Social Security. Lensing, who was nominated by petition to run for Congress, told a Decorah group that he favors phasing out Social Security over a 50 year period. Maske, however, told the group he would "fight to maintain Social Security exactly as it is."
Maske, the Democrat running for the seat now held by Republican Tom Latham, said the Social Security program would be in fine shape once the "serious economic challenges" facing the nation are resolved.
Latham was invited to Tuesday night's candidate forum in Decorah but did not attend.
